Spider-Man actor Tom Holland has provided a long-awaited update on the next Spider-Man movie and it’s not exactly the news fans were expecting. Rather than confirming his continued involvement in the MCU, Holland says that he’s simply waiting for the right story to come along before he considers making another Spider-Man movie.
2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home capped off director Jon Watts’ MCU Spider-Man trilogy quite spectacularly, bringing in former actors Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire to reprise their roles as the superheroes alongside a handful of villains like Green Goblin and Doc Ock. The movie ended on a bittersweet note and left the door open for a potential follow-up, which we know will inevitably happen, though Tom Holland is taking a cautionary approach to making the next entry.
Holland spoke at the Critics Choice Association press conference recently, stating that he’s open to returning to the MCU but wants to wait for a good story that justifies Spider-Man’s ongoing adventure:
“Whether or not we can find a way to do justice to the character is another thing. I feel very protective over Spider-Man. I feel very, very lucky that we were able to work on a franchise that got better with each movie, that got more successful with each movie, which I think is really rare, and I want to protect his legacy. So, I won’t make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character.”
Holland added, “If we can figure that out, I would be a fool not to put the suit back on again because I owe everything to Spider-Man. I love the character and the people I get to work with. So, I would love to tell another story, but I’ll only tell it if we can find the right one.”
Marvel Studios confirmed in November 2021 that Holland would reappear in the MCU for three more movies as the character. However, the actor has since vouched for Marvel Studios to switch from Peter Parker to Miles Morales as the next leading Spider-Man.
