Trek to Yomi Delivers Stylish Samurai Combat in New Trailer

Publisher Devolver Digital and developer Flying Wild Hog’s upcoming monochromatic action-adventure game Trek to Yomi has received a new trailer highlighting the samurai title’s beautiful combat with an irresistible old-school style inspired by Akira Kurosawa.

The gameplay for Trek to Yomi will seem familiar to those who played 2020’s Ghost of Tsushima, albeit on a much smaller scale. The game also adopts a side-scroller perspective, though instinctive combat techniques like countering, dodging and well-timed deflections are a standout and almost a core pillar to most samurai-themed video games today.

Devolver Digital provides an overview of the game’s story:

“As a vow to his dying Master, a young swordsman is sworn to protect his town and the people he loves against all threats. Faced with tragedy and bound to duty, the lone samurai must voyage beyond life and death to confront himself and decide his path forward.”

Trek to Yomi adopts a monochromatic visual style that creates an atmosphere reminiscent of legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa and iconic films like Yojimbo and Seven Samurai. Players will be required to pay attention to enemy attacks, utilising well-timed counters for offensive and defensive play.

While the game is only listed to release sometime in 2022, Trek to Yomi has gained some attention online thanks to its striking art direction and gameplay that might cater towards fans of Ghost of Tsushima if you’re looking for an indie alternative. Flying Wild Hog have yet to announce a release date, though it might be fairly soon as the game’s marketing has ramped up quite a bit since the start of the year.

Trek to Yomi releases in 2022 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Make sure you check out the awesome combat trailer below.
