Turkey Hit With Massive PlayStation Game Price Hike

Gamers in Turkey are up in arms over a recent PlayStation Store price hike that has seen game prices jump by between $20 – $30. Players have also complained that these new price hikes are only related to PlayStation Store products as Xbox and Steam have remained unchanged.

To compare prices, Assassin’s Creed Shadows costs TL 1,749 on Xbox while on the PlayStation Store, this game is now TL 2,799. The game was listed at TL 2,000 previously on the PlayStation Store before the price hike.

Keep in mind that these price changes in Turkey don’t make these games more expensive than in other regions. In fact, Turkey was previously known for its “cheaper” PlayStation Network game prices. Users would often create Turkish PSN accounts and purchase PSN vouchers in the region to take advantage of these cheaper games.

I know in South Africa, this was a trend for a while. Local gamers could save R600 – R800 on a new triple-A game by purchasing it from the Turkish store. This new price hike has seemingly aligned the store prices with most other global territories.

For example, Assassin’s Creed Shadows now costs TL 2,799. This is around R1500 and is roughly aligned with our local R1429 listing. So PlayStation isn’t really overcharging gamers in the region compared to other countries.

Of course, Turkey’s economy is currently in shambles so the backlash is expected. The country has an average monthly salary of $400 so gamers on a tight budget are going to have to now wrestle with the idea of purchasing these newly-priced games.

At the moment the situation looks more like Sony levelling out the store prices rather than price-gouging them to take advantage of gamers. If Sony were to consider lower PSN prices for all struggling economies, South Africans would also demand cheaper games. Things just don’t work out that way, sadly.

The sad news here is that gamers who took advantage of the cheaper Turkish PlayStation Store prices will now have to bite the bullet and pay the full price like everyone else.

It is still too early to tell whether or not Steam and the Xbox Store will follow these price hikes. Given how these stores are still severely under-priced, it might be a matter of time.
