Have you ever looked at your PS5 or PS5 Pro console and wanted to completely change the design of it? Perhaps you are unhappy with the shape, size, and colour?
Well, firstly, you can change your console covers pretty easily. You can even use the PS5 Slim Console Covers on the PS5 Pro (I made them work in a video here). But if that isn’t enough, there’s a new product coming to market that will transform your PS5 into a box.
YouTuber Devyn Johnston has opened pre-orders for his new box-shaped PS5 console covers, which are inspired by the Xbox Series S and the PS4 Pro’s sandwich design. Before you jump at the opportunity to grab a set, they are expensive. Like $85 for two pieces of plastic— expensive. You’re looking at +R2500 with shipping for these.
In a video that was uploaded in January, Devyn takes you through the entire design process for these console covers. He reveals that while you can easily purchase third-party covers on the market, they all have the same design, and no one is really taking advantage of the potential the PS5 has in terms of customization. So he did.
The plates he designed combine the best parts of the Xbox Series S and the PS4 Pro. The result is a box-shaped PS5 console that looks quite cool, if I do say so myself. Devyn says designing these plates took a lot of trial and error. He had to scan the PS5 using a 3D IR scanner in order to bring the design into a digital platform. He then had to reverse engineer the clips while at the same time taking into account the air intake and vent positions.
As a result of all of this fancy scanning and 3D CAD modelling, Devyn created these box covers. If you like the design, you can buy them for the steep price of only $85. I do think they are pretty cool. Would I pay R2500 for them? Perhaps not. I would rather stick to filing down the clips on the Chroma Collection plates and slapping those onto my PS5 Pro instead.
But if this is a product you’re into, pre-order them here. Devyn Johnston says they are expected to ship in March.
