Earlier this week, reports surfaced suggesting that Sony’s unannounced Twisted Metal PS5 reboot had changed developers, going from Lucid Games to an unnamed new studio. Now, Video Games Chronicle reports that the new developer is the newly acquired FireSprite. Additionally, it’s likely that MotorStorm director Matt Southern may be involved.
According to VGC sources, the Twisted Metal reboot will be handled by FireSprite, the team who previously worked on the WipeOut series and was acquired by PlayStation last year. Interestingly, the FireSprite offices are mere minutes away from Lucid Games’ studio in Liverpool, UK, so it makes sense.
Adding a bit more fuel to the fire (no pun intended), an eagle-eyed ResetEra managed to uncover that Matt Southern, the director behind MotorStorm: Apocalypse and Destruction AllStars, had moved from Lucid Games to FireSprite, taking up a “game director” position. It’s entirely possible that Southern is now leading as the director behind the Twisted Metal revival.
Since none of this has officially been confirmed by PlayStation and the director’s involvement may be wild speculation, VGC is a trustworthy source and it’s likely that Southern will be involved in the upcoming project in some capacity. What gives these reboot rumours some weight is PlayStation’s announcement of a Twisted Metal TV series starring MCU actor Anthony Mackie. The show is expected to arrive sometime in 2023, and it’s possible that PlayStation wants the rumoured game to coincide with its release.
As with all rumours, we’ll just have to see how this develops, though there’s been enough evidence to suggest that the Twisted Metal reboot is happening and it isn’t too far off from release either. Nonetheless, we’ll have to wait a while for more information if the reboot had just entered the hands of a new developer.
