A sequel to the popular 1996 disaster movie, Twister, is currently in the works at Universal and Amblin Entertainment. The sequel will be titled Twisters though plot details are currently unknown. According to a new report, Top Gun: Maverick actor Glen Powell might be joining the cast of the sequel alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones.
As reported by Variety, Glen Powell is currently in talks to join Twisters. Powell is best known for starring in last year’s acclaimed action movie, Top Gun: Maverick, as well as generally having a likeable personality both on and off screen.

Steven Spielberg, who produced the first movie, reportedly pushed to get the sequel made after reading the screenplay by Mark L. Smith. Twisters will be directed by Lee Isaac Chung who previously directed the award-winning 2020 drama Minari and also helmed an episode of The Mandalorian. So far, little is known about the movie but it’s on track to release on 19 July 2024. Shooting should commence sooner rather than later.
The 1996 movie Twister starred Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt as well as Phillip Seymour Hoffman. It went on the gross over $500 million at the box office and told the story of a group of storm-chasers trying to predict weather patterns and emerging tornadoes using new technology. The movie has since gone on to become a classic and is widely regarded as one of the better disaster movies of the 90s, despite middling reviews upon its release.
Needless to say, disaster movies are in a bit of rough spot right now in Hollywood. After the box office flop and critical failure of Roland Emmerich’s Moonfall, the genre has seemingly died down. With the right talent behind Twisters, we might see a resurgence of the genre again and hopefully it’s a step above the recent attempts.
