Ubisoft has openly addressed the controversy surrounding Assassin’s Creed Shadows and arguments that it isn’t historically accurate – more specifically, addressed an ongoing debate about whether one of its protagonists, Yasuke, was actually annointed a samurai in history or not. There’s been plenty of back-and-forth on this subject for months but the company has now directly responded to this debate to its Japanese players.
Ubisoft released a statement on Twitter/X today reiterating that all Assassin’s Creed games are, first and foremost, works of fiction inspired by historical events and characters. This has been a notice since the very first Assassin’s Creed game featured the statement before jumping into the main menu.
On the subject of Yasuke, Ubisoft said that it worked closely with various consultants including historians, researchers and internal teams to accurately depict the character of Yasuke and certain Japanese events “to inform our creative choices.” However, Ubisoft’s team also stresses that in the end, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a work of fiction with creative liberties taken for some characters. Some Japanese historians have even come forward to confirm that Yasuke’s status was indeed that of a samurai, though it’s still a hot debate online about whether or not he could be considered one. Either way, Assassin’s Creed Shadows depicts Yasuke as a samurai. On the other hand, the other playable protagonist, Naoe, is also featured in the game as a Japanese shinobi – a fictional character created specifically for the game.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows launches on 12 November 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Make sure you read up on these incredible details you might’ve missed as well as the South African pre-order guide before the game launches.
