Ubisoft has quietly launched a full-blown NFT game on PC titled Champions Tactics. This follows older statements from the company revealing that it had planned to pursue blockchain games and even doubled down on them when confronted with backlash from the gaming community. Almost three years later (and after a cryptocurrency crash), Ubisoft is back in the NFT scene.
Champions Tactics is described as a “PVP tactical RPG game on PC” both developed and published by Ubisoft. Set in the world of Grimoria, players are tasked with collecting figurines of various warriors to assemble in squads of three in turn-based combat. Of course, the key words there are “collectible figurines” and this is where the NFTs come into play. When you start the game, you’re given a handful of temporary figurines but eventually, the game will probably ask you to purchase your own figurines as NFTs using in-game gold or cryptocurrency.
You can also craft your own figurines using the game’s “Forge” system but that too requires cryptocurrency or in-game spending. Figurines on the marketplace range from $7 to a massive $63k for the pricier items. Thankfully, most of these prices seem to hover around $335 but that’s still ridiculously expensive for the average gamer.
It’s technically possible to simply play the game for free without ever indulging in the NFT marketplace but since this appears to be a strictly PvP experience, players who choose to splurge on the expensive figurines will likely have a huge advantage. It remains to be seen how Ubisoft plans to balance it all or if it’s simply a way to drive players to engage with NFTs. Either way, it doesn’t sound like a very fun time.
Champions Tactics is free to download on PC but it requires a Ubisoft account and a supported blockchain wallet to play it.
