Ubisoft is reportedly working on a new game that’s said to be inspired by Nintendo’s Animal Crossing. A few details have also leaked of this unannounced project called “Alterra”. The report claims that it will feature a visual presentation similar to Minecraft along with building and crafting mechanics.
According to a new report from Insider Gaming, Alterra is a game currently in development at Ubisoft that’s heavily inspired by Animal Crossing. The project will apparently use voxels to generate its world – for those unfamiliar, voxel graphics display cubes on a grid like Minecraft. NPCs called “Matterlings” will also be featured in the game and have appearances resembling Funko Pops, albeit in voxel style. Players will reportedly be able to construct buildings and craft items from resources out in the world.
On the matter of Matterlings, Insider Gaming claims that certain NPCs will resemble fictional creatures like dragons with other real-world inspirations like polar bears and birds. Finally, the report reveals that Alterra currently in development at Ubisoft Montreal with former Gotham Knights lead Patrick Redding serving as its creative director. Insider Gaming says the project has been in development for 18 months, though it’s still years away from a release or announcement.
In related news, Ubisoft is being sued for shutting down the servers to The Crew. The lawsuit argues that players who purchase a physical copy of the game now receive no warning about the servers being taken offline. Additionally, the two California-based players who filed the lawsuit argued that instead of buying a physical copy to play the full game, they were simply buying a license for it – one that could be revoked at any time by Ubisoft without warning. As of writing, the lawsuit seems to be ongoing.
Ubisoft is gearing up to release Assassin’s Creed Shadows on 14 February 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
