Hyper Scape Ubisoft Shut Down Battle Royale

Ubisoft Reportedly Making Another Battle Royale Inspired by Apex Legends

Ubisoft is taking another crack at the battle royale genre, this time with a new game inspired by Apex Legends. That’s according to sources close to Insider Gaming which claim that the untitled battle royale is called “Scout.” Apparently, it’s been in development for a few years already and could be close to release.

As reported by Insider Gaming, Ubisoft is taking a few pages from the book of Apex Legends for its own new battle royale game. According to the report, the characters in “Scout” are said to be quite similar in design to familiar Apex characters like Pathfinder, Wraith and Lifeline. Higher-ups at Ubisoft apparently want to take advantage of Apex Legends‘ dwindling player base, which has been on the steady decline over the past year.

The reality is interest in battle royale games isn’t as strong as it once was several years ago. While games like Fortnite manage to stay afloat thanks to its strong pop culture crossovers and collaborations, other titles within the genre have failed to hold the attention of players who might be getting fatigued by its gameplay (not to mention all the other options on the market constantly competing for your attention and money).

Ubisoft’s first attempt at breaking into the battle royale trend was with 2020’s short-lived Hyper Scape, which had its servers shut down in April 2022 after failing to retain its player base. At this point, the industry was flooded with battle royale games so it didn’t help Ubisoft’s cause.

It’s a truly baffling decision to try and make yet another battle royale game seeing as the industry has slowly shied away from the trend when it realised there’s little room for competition against the bigger names like Fortnite and Apex Legends, despite being the second most popular battle royale game out, is showing signs of dropping off already.
