Far Cry 6 Free Upgrade

Unlike Activision and Sony, Ubisoft Wants You To Have Free Upgrades

Ubisoft wants gamers to know that if you purchase Far Cry 6 on PS4 or Xbox One, you can upgrade the game to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S at no additional cost. This shouldn’t be news to you. The developer hasn’t charged gamers for any upgrade at all this generation. Last year, the developer released a handful of games that were cross-gen. This included Immortals: Fenyx Rising, Watch Dogs: Legion and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. All of which offered free upgrades to players.

Far Cry 6 isn’t changing this approach at all. Ubisoft has once again confirmed that players will be entitled to a free upgrade of Far Cry 6. Of course, this upgrade is all dependant on your console and game. If you buy the game on disc on PS4 and Xbox and upgrade to a non-disc console like the PS5 Digital Edition or Xbox Series S you won’t be able to upgrade the game. Digital versions will entitle you to both copies.

Ubisoft is going off-trend when compared to the likes of Activision and Sony. Both companies have been abusing gamers with paid upgrades across PS4 and PS5. Activision has a pricier “Cross-Gen” bundle available for Call of Duty: Vanguard that grants players last-gen and current-gen games. If you don’t purchase this bundle, you can’t upgrade your game.

As for Sony, they recently came under fire for charging gamers to upgrade Horizon Forbidden West from the PS4 to the PS5 version. They even locked players out of the upgrade if they purchased a specific Collector’s Edition. Sony has since backtracked on that decision. However, they have stated that God of War, Gran Turismo 7 and future cross-gen games will include an upgrade fee.

Ubisoft has made it easy for gamers. No matter what version you buy, you get the game across both generations. Far Cry 6 is just under a month away from release. The game releases on 7 October 2021 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC. We recently had hands-on with the shooter. Check out our preview here.
