Unreal Engine 5 Launches With Dozens of Studios Working on Games

The Unreal Engine 5 is now officially available and more developers are sharing what they are currently doing in the engine. Apart from the big news that Crystal Dynamics is currently working on a new Tomb Raider game in Unreal Engine 5, other developers have confirmed projects too.

The first one is, of course, The Coalition. For those who don’t know, The Coalition is the studio behind the Gears of War series. The developers already confirmed last year that they shifted the new Gears game into Unreal Engine 5. However, during the Unreal Engine 5 showcase, they showed off some in-engine footage called “The Cavern”.

The Coalition claims that this tech demo is a cinematic test demo running on Unreal Engine 5 and allows the studio to test assets with up to 100x more graphical detail. In the demo, you can see this world come to life with incredible detail. Not only is the environment unlike anything we have ever seen before but the character model is also insanely detailed. This is especially seen on his face through the facial animation. The Coalition shared some details on the demo saying:

We were able to utilize a preliminary version of our next-gen face rig and hire an actor wearing a head-cam to capture performance, and partner with Cubic Motion to bring it all to life. That, coupled with Control Rig, helped us create someone who looks and moves in the most realistic ways we’ve ever done, and it’s incredibly exciting to think where we can go next. We also utilized Chaos cloth physics to get to a really high level of visual fidelity, and we’re extremely pleased with the results.

The coolest part is that we’ve got all these great visuals and animations running on an Xbox Series X, so that just gives you an idea of the visual fidelity and quality we’re going to be able to create. Demos like this allow us to learn a great deal about the performance of UE5, and I think it’s safe to say that we’re going to be able to create some pretty incredible things with this new tech.

But Crystal Dynamics and The Coalition aren’t the only studios working on new games in Unreal Engine 5. Epic Games revealed that dozens of studios have picked up the developer build of the platform and are now full steam ahead into development with the game.

Studios include the likes of Sumo Digital, Remedy, Far From Home, Focus Entertainment, Playdead, Haven. Gearbox Software, PlayStation Studios and Xbox. We also know that CD Projekt RED is working on its new The Witcher video game using Unreal Engine 5.

Sadly, it is going to be a few years until we actually see any of these Unreal Engine 5 games come to life. The news is still quite exciting.
