Valve is Developing a Standalone Version of Dota Auto Chess

Valve has a history of taking mods and developing standalone versions of them. That’s why I totally believed the rumour early this year that Valve would be taking Dota Auto Chess and turning it into a full game. Well, the rumour turned out to be true as Valve has announced that they will be developing a standalone version of Dota Auto Chess.

Keep in mind that the original DotA was a Warcraft III mod, which was spawned from a Starcraft mod called Aeon of Strife and now, the extremely popular Dota Auto Chess mode will be the next step for the developer. Valve announced this news in a new post, explaining that they have been in talks with the mod creator, Drodo Studio, after playing the mod “roughly a billion times”.

Valve flew to China in February to talk to the mod creators to start a conversation about working together. Valve explains how things went down:

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”#33f6ff” class=”” size=”25″]So in February we flew the Drodo team over from China to chat about the future of Dota Auto Chess, and to see if they’d want to collaborate directly with us (this was also during one of the worst weeks of snow we’ve had in years, sorry about that, Drodo). We had great conversations, but we both came to the conclusion that Valve and Drodo could not work directly with each other for a variety of reasons. We ended up agreeing that we’ll each build our own stand-alone version of the game, and support each other to the fullest.[/perfectpullquote]

With Drodo’s blessing, Valve is now working on its own standalone version of DAC while the mod creators will continue to update the extremely popular mod going forward. Drodo had this to say about the meeting with Valve:

[perfectpullquote align=”full” bordertop=”false” cite=”” link=”” color=”#46ff33″ class=”” size=”25″]We appreciate the great encouragements, support and help that Valve offered on Dota Auto Chess and Drodo’s standalone game. Valve has been a great company, who gave birth to the Steam Platform and open community like Workshop, enabling millions of players to display their talents. Being a fan of Dota2, we have great confidence in Valve’s new game, and expect the next world-class game. In the meantime, with Valve’s support, Drodo will continue updating the DAC mod, and attempt to design new modes and adaptations in our stand-alone game. We endeavor to offer more to you, all the fans that like Auto Chess. Thank you, it’s you that are making this possible. We look forward to growing together![/perfectpullquote]

The developer has also been working on their own, non-dota mobile game which is out of beta right now. You can check it out by following this link.
