Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2 Baldur's Gate 3 Inspiration

Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2 is Inspired by Baldur’s Gate 3

Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2, the upcoming RPG from developer The Chinese Room, is taking some inspiration from Baldur’s Gate 3. The long-awaited sequel to the cult classic RPG from the now-defunct Troika Games is aiming to not only deliver a satisfying follow-up to the original but modernise the franchise for new players – and it’s looking to the master of modernising franchises for inspiration.

Speaking to PC Gamer in a recent interview, Bloodlines 2 narrative designer Arone Le Bray spoke about how the massive success of this year’s Baldur’s Gate 3 was a source of creative inspiration for The Chinese Room. “[Sarah Longthrone] (one of our writers) is a huge fan of Baldur’s Gate 3, we’re looking at how we can borrow aspects [from it], or how we can make sure we’re not taking giant steps backwards in terms of stories,” said Le Bray.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is praised for the many things it does right but above all, it tells a compelling central narrative with several intertwining character stories and side quests that enriches the role-playing experience. As a result, no side quest feels out of place and most plot threads weave seamlessly into the main story at some points.

If Bloodlines 2 wants to take a few pointers from an RPG to enhance its own storytelling, we’re glad it’s Baldur’s Gate 3. Larian’s RPG even includes its own vampiric character, Astarion, whose personal quest sheds light on the fascinating lore of vampires and the traumatic psychological effects it has on those who submit to the curse. Since Bloodlines 2 is all about diving head-first into the rich folklore of vampirism, Astarion’s story might be a good blueprint to build on – of course, without the D&D backdrop.

In related news, Le Bray also spoke about including a voiced protagonist in the upcoming game for players to form a closer connection to them. The game was officially re-revealed in September and is currently expected to release sometime in fall 2024.

Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2 releases in fall 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
