Venom 3 has found its director in Kelly Marcel, who previously wrote and produced the first two Venom films. She will be returning as both a screenwriter and director on the third film, which is currently in the very early stages of development. Tom Hardy will reprise his role as Eddie Brock/Venom, though no additional casting or story details have been revealed yet.
Sony is now pushing ahead with Venom 3, which shouldn’t really come as a surprise. The first film, which was directed by Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer, earned over $800 million in the global box office. A sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, was directed by Andy Serkis and managed to score over $500 million globally during the pandemic. Together, both films have grossed over $1.3 billion.
Sony Pictures already confirmed earlier this year that a third Venom film was coming alongside a new Ghostbusters sequel. According to Deadline, Marcel will now direct Venom 3. She previously served as the first two films’ writer and producer. She also penned the screenplay for Fifty Shades of Grey.
We can only speculate where Venom 3 might go after the events of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which saw Venom square off against the popular symbiote villain, Carnage. Major spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home and Venom: Let There Be Carnage incoming – the sequel revealed that Eddie had travelled to an alternate universe which we now know is the same universe that No Way Home took place in. Before Eddie was zapped away again, he left a piece of symbiote goo in Spider-Man’s world.
This could be our biggest indication that Venom might confront Spider-Man in Venom 3, as Sony shares the rights to use the popular superhero with Marvel Studios. It’s unlikely that Tom Holland will be the Spider-Man candidate for this crossover, but actor Andrew Garfield said his return isn’t out of the question, especially since he appeared for a decent amount of time in No Way Home. Could we see Garfield and Hardy in Venom 3? Possibly, though we’ll wait for more information for now.
Venom 3 currently doesn’t have a release date yet.
