Warner Bros. Games is reportedly developing a Super Smash Bros. style fighting game that will see several of their universes crossover, including the likes of Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings and Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, among others .The game, apparently titled Multiversus, isn’t being developed by NetherRealm Studios as some suspected, though.
The rumours first appeared on a Reddit report which was then corroborated by VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb, who has been a reputable source of information in the industry. He states that Warner Bros. is indeed working on a multiverse fighting game which was largely inspired by the ‘Ultra Instinct Shaggy’ meme which showed the famous Scooby-Doo character designed as a fighter in Dragon Ball Super.
Grubb quickly squashed rumours that NetherRealm Studios were behind the game (as the original report suggested), stating:
“This WB platform fighter is real, but it is not a Netherrealm game. Come on.”
Warner Bros. Games recently trademarked the name Multiversus, leading many to believe that this is the official title of the fighting game. Some characters were also dropped, coming from various franchises under Warner Bros. label, including Shaggy, Gandalf, Batman, Tom & Jerry, Fred Flintstone, Mad Max and Johnny Bravo. That’s quite a list of crossover fighters that would surely make Nintendo raise an eyebrow.
While NetherRealm would’ve been a perfect fit for this type of fighting game, it looks like they may have their hands full already with Mortal Kombat 12 and possibly Injustice 3, though none of these have been confirmed yet. The studio developing this fighter remains unknown, and if these reports are true, we’ll just have to wait until Warner Bros. Games is ready to make the big announcement. Until then, we recommend taking all of this with a pinch of salt, as great as it would be to have Shaggy square off with Gandalf.
