Compulsion Games, the developers behind We Happy Few, is hard at work on their next major project following their acquisition by Microsoft. According to new reports, their new game is said to be a dark “southern gothic” adventure with fantasy elements. Additionally, we also got our first look at some early art.
As reported by Windows Central’s Jez Corden, who has a reliable track record of industry information and leaks, Compulsion Games’ next project is currently going under the working title Project Midnight. Corden describes the game as dark, with a “southern gothic” tone combining adventure and fantasy elements. The game is said to be a more traditional single-player third-person title set in the American south.

Windows Central was able to grab some early concept art for Project Midnight, showing some rather interesting and almost unsettling imagery with dark fantasy elements. Have a look at it below:
Judging by this early concept art, it seems like a major deviation from what Compulsion Games had did before with We Happy Few, though to its credit, it did also tackle darker themes hidden beneath an upbeat and colourful art style. Project Midnight looks like it could be embracing a more intentionally dark and gothic nature, with imagery that resembles something we’d likely see in a From Software game.
According to Corden, Project Midnight currently does not have an official title as it might still be in the middle of development, though could be revealed in the next couple of years. Meanwhile, Xbox’s upcoming roster from its expanded first-party studios includes Arkane Studios’ vampire-hunting open-world RPG Redfall, Bethesda Game Studios’ space RPG Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6, and many more projects rumoured to be in development from id Software, MachineGames and more.
