WhatsApp Getting Video and Voice Calls On The Web

Meta is seemingly rolling out video and voice calls for WhatsApp on the web. In the latest build of the web client, WABetaInfo spotted a number of references to video and voice calls.

Up to now, if you want to make video or voice calls on WhatsApp, you would always need to rely on the dedicated iOS, Android, macOS, or Windows app. This means that while you could easily log into WhatsApp on a desktop browser and access your chats, there was no way to make calls, be it video or voice.

This new feature will bring all the calling options to the chat client without having to install any dedicated app. It will make using the desktop version a lot more accessible to account users, especially when they aren’t able to access their dedicated tech.

Of course, the WhatsApp desktop voice and video call feature will come with its own permission requirements. WhatsApp requires that users log into the desktop client with their accounts and link their mobile phones to the platform. Once done, they will be able to grant access to whatever camera and microphone they have on the device they are using.

The new feature should go a long way in making WhatsApp more versatile and, if anything, can be used as an alternative to, say, Microsoft Teams. At the moment, we don’t know exactly when WhatsApp plans on rolling this feature out. The latest build is the first to include the direct reference to it. So we might see it soon.
