Why you should care about Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle


At E3 2017 one game clearly stood out amongst the rest. It was a game that merged the awesome world of Mario with the crazy world of Ubisoft's Raving Rabbids into one solid experience. The demo I played showed off the game's fluid combat system, alongside a stunning world and crazy characters. The Rabbids have invaded the Mushroom Kingdom and they are causing all sorts of problems. Mario now teams up with Princess Peach and Luigi, who has seemingly been turned into Rabbids. The game features a turn-based combat system that merges tactical gameplay seen in titles like XCOM, with a cover-based system. 

In the demo, which you can see below, it shows the game's world where you can explore every corner of the Mushroom Kingdom. When you engage in combat, you enter a tactical combat scenario where you take control of each party member and move them across the battleground in a block formation.

Taking cover behind bricks and pipes will defend you against attacks, but enemies can also attempt to attack you while covered, which will destroy the block after a few attacks. The same goes for attacking enemies who also hide behind these blocks. 

When it is your turn you can move each character across the battlefield and kick an enemy, then move to cover and then shoot them. The combination of attacks is what made the combat stand out for me as you can also use the other characters in the party to extend the battle even more. One example of this is when I ran to Mario's block, kicked off his back which let me move further into the battlefield, and reach an enemy who was previously too far to attack. This method can be done in any way such as run and slide into an enemy, and then kick off a party member to fly further into the battlefield, and then shoot the enemy. 

The gadgets and skills also make the combat system even more detailed as Peach has a healing skill, Mario has a damage boost, and Luigi has a status effect skill. These can be used in battle at any time, but have a cooldown timer which refills the abilities after a certain amount of turns. New weapons can be bought and equipped, but these were limited in the demo.

While the demo was great, it was simply scratching the surface on what the game has on offer and I cannot wait to play the full game when it launches exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on 29 August 2017. Take a look at the full E3 gameplay demo which I played at a special influencer event Ubisoft was hosting. I was able to walk away with the footage too and with the help of the MSI GE72 Apache Pro, I was able to edit its 30GB of uncompressed goodness and make sure I could upload it to share it with you.
