After over a year of testing, the Windows App is now available for iPhone, Mac and Android devices. Essentially, the app acts as a streaming hub for Windows allowing users to stream a copy of Windows to a variety of devices so they can access their operating system and personal files.
The app doesn’t only act as a direct link to your PC but it has other features too. You can launch the app to customised home screen wallpapers, connect it to multiple monitors and take advantage of USB redirection. This allows you to access devices such as webcams, storage devices and printers. As a result, the device from which you’re accessing the app can use devices as if they were directly plugged into this cloud PC.
At the moment, Microsoft has only rolled out the app for Microsoft Work and School accounts. It has been built with Remote Desktop clients in mind. While the Remote Desktop Connection is still available in Windows 11, this Windows App will likely replace it down the line. It acts as an easy solution for connection to your work PCs and personal notebooks.
Microsoft hasn’t stated yet whether the app will roll out for consumer accounts. However, it makes sense to make this available to all Windows users given Microsoft’s ambitions to move everything to the cloud.
If you want to test out the app, you can download it from the Microsoft Store and Apple App Store for iOS, macOS and iPadOS. The Android version is only available in preview for now.
