Windows is Getting its Own Magic AI Eraser to Edit Photos

Microsoft has announced a new Generative Erase feature coming to Windows 11 in the near future. The tool will let users easily edit photos using AI while simply opening up images in the stock Photos app on the operating system.

Microsoft showed off some of the features of this new Generative Erase tool. One demo showed the app completely erase a dog leash from a photo and replace the missing area with detailed dog fur.

At the moment, the feature is rolling out to Windows Insiders and should make its way to all users in the future. Microsoft hasn’t commented on whether or not these edited photos will have any sort of metadata or watermarks attached to them.

The company also confirmed that the feature isn’t only coming to Windows 11 devices but also Windows 10 and Windows 11 running on Arm64 chipsets.

Using the tool seems simple enough. You’ll click on Edit Image on the app and select the Erase button. You’ll then brush over the areas you want to remove and the generative AI will do the rest.

If testing goes well for this new tool, we should see it roll out to all users soon. At the moment, you’ll be able to use the feature if you’re part of the Windows 11 Insider Program and the Photo App version is on 2024.11020.21001.0.

  • All of the current Photos app AI edit features, including Blur background, Remove and Replace background, and Generative erase are now available in the Photos app for Windows 11 for Arm64 devices.
  • For the first time, Windows 10 will be receiving all of the AI editing features that were previously available only on Windows 11, including Blur background, Remove and Replace background, and Generative erase.
  • Various stability fixes and improvements
