Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, the upcoming action-RPG from Nioh developer Team Ninja, recently received a dev diary video that showcased some new gameplay, including character creation. The development team also provided some new details about the game’s setting, gameplay and enemies.
During the recent Xbox presentation at Tokyo Game Show 2022, Team Ninja took the spotlight to talk more about Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, which is shaping up to look more and more like the spiritual successor to Nioh. Players will once again be able to create a custom character (like Nioh 2), though the customisation options seem to be plentiful and visually fantastic, largely thanks to the upgraded visuals.

Team Ninja talked about the game’s unique setting of ancient China and the Three Kingdoms as a direct source of inspiration. The game will tackle various Chinese mythologies and creatures, giving the game its supernatural edge similar to what we saw for the Japanese mythology in the Nioh games.
Combat, however, is described as a “dance” of defending, positioning and attacking. A well-timed evasion and parry can stagger an enemy for a bit, leaving them vulnerable to attack. The game will also allow players to initiate vertical attacks by launching in the air and striking down. Magic is also seen being used in the video, though it’s more traditional as players can seemingly cast it independently.
The presentation of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty looks stunning and certainly a step up from the Nioh games. While it’s not representative of the final product, it does give us an indication of what we’ll be doing in the game, what kind of graphical fidelity we can expect and how all the systems connect. Nioh 2 was particularly praised for its deep and complex systems and combat, so hopefully that momentum can be carried over to Wo Long.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty releases in early 2023 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC. It will also be released day one on Xbox Game Pass. Check out the full dev diary below.
