Publisher Koei Tecmo and developer Team Ninja have released a new story trailer for the upcoming dark fantasy action-RPG, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. The trailer, which arrives a couple of months before release, focuses heavily on the story of the game, but also gives us glimpses of new enemies, bosses, characters and gameplay.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is largely based on Chinese mythology (unlike the Japanese mythology of the Nioh games) and draws inspiration from the Three Kingdoms and various historical Chinese events and characters, albeit with a supernatural twist. The story trailer is light on making much sense, but we gather that heroes need to stop an evil antagonist from achieving immortality and threatening the world. Expect plenty of demons, monsters and blood.

Koei Tecmo provided a description for Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty‘s story:
“Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty features a storyline set in the Later Han Dynasty of the Three Kingdoms, with the combat and cut scenes supervised by the game’s Cinematics Director, Kenji Tanigaki, the famed action director of the popular Rurouni Kenshin movie series. These powerful action scenes are at the center of Koei Tecmo’s latest trailer, showcasing the game’s dramatic storyline. The original story follows a nameless militia soldier who confronts a conspiracy surrounding a potent elixir with mysterious powers. Along the way, the soldier not only confronts countless demons and monsters, but famous warlords and military masterminds from history, including Liu Bei, Cao Cao, and Sun Jian.”
After the arguable misstep of Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, it’s great to see Team Ninja back in top form with Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. It’s clearly trying to be something different to the Nioh series, but it’s also littered with some of the developer’s signatures including frenetic combat, a stylish presentation and crushing difficulty.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty releases on 3 March 2023 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC. It will also launch day one on Xbox Game Pass. Check out the full story trailer below.
