Yesterday, rumours surfaced about World of Warcraft, the incredibly popular MMORPG from Blizzard Entertainment, coming to Xbox Game Pass as well as receiving a potential console version. Microsoft has now clarified the rumours, claiming the source of it to be a mistake on their part regarding a recent marketing ad for Game Pass.
Game Pass subscribers received an email yesterday highlighting the subscription service and all available games you can currently play. However, users noticed one section of the ad stated, “Play Call of Duty, Diablo IV, World of Warcraft, and more of Activision’s biggest hits with Game Pass!” This led many to believe that Xbox was gearing up to announce World of Warcraft for the subscription service – to make matters worse, an icon featured in the email suggested that it might be coming to Xbox consoles too.
Microsoft has come out to clarify these error with a statement, revealing that the ad was a mistake and that World of Warcraft wasn’t coming to Game Pass after all:
“This was a mistake on our end, sorry for the confusion. Blizzard’s World of Warcraft was accidentally included in a game pass email even though it’s not available with the service – a correction email will be sent to those who got the original email soon.”
Rumours of a potential console version have been floating around since 2023. In fact, Blizzard previously stated that it may still be a possibility but didn’t offer a definitive answer. The popular MMORPG has enjoyed a lot of success over the past decades with millions of players in rotation. Many fans believe it would be a wise idea for Microsoft, which now owns publisher Activision Blizzard, to actually deliver on an Xbox port. Whether that actually happens in the future is anyone’s guess.

In the meantime, Xbox boss Phil Spencer says there will no longer be exclusives going forward, with plans to launch upcoming first-party titles on other platforms.
