Microsoft recently added Square Enix and Eidos Montreal’s Guardians of the Galaxy game to Xbox Game Pass. While Xbox has been quiet about their Game Pass deals, an analyst claims that they paid between $5-10 million to get the 2021 game on their subscription service.
Senior analyst at MST financial, David Gibson, recently estimated that Xbox paid Square Enix around $5-10 million to get Guardians of the Galaxy on Game Pass. The figure was never officially confirmed, but Gibson says the estimate is based on “discussions with Square Enix and others.”

Usually most analysts’ claims would be brushed off, but Gibson had been working as an analyst for Square Enix for over 15 years, so he might have some firm ground to stand on about this claim.
As previously mentioned, Xbox and Microsoft don’t actually disclose the exact figures for getting games onto Game Pass. If Gibson is to be believed, then we have an idea of what AAA games might cost to be put on Xbox’s subscription service. It’s also worth noting that Guardians of the Galaxy was only out for a few months before that, so more money might’ve been involved than usual.
Another reason why this exchange might’ve happened is due to the game underperforming, according to Square Enix. Despite the low sales, Guardians of the Galaxy still managed to earn a highly positive fan reception with mostly solid reviews across the board too.
Hopefully Gibson’s estimate sheds some light on Xbox’s cost of bringing games to Game Pass, though figures could vary depending on the game and its situation. On the plus side, more players have now been given a chance to play Guardians of the Galaxy as the game might’ve flew under radars last year.
Guardians of the Galaxy is now available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
