Some Xbox games will soon run better than ever thanks to a new Xbox FPS Boost mode coming to the Xbox Series X and S. The new feature is designed to make existing games run better by focusing on improved frame rates through backwards compatibility. This is automatically achieved without the need for developers to sit and tweak their game code.
Certain games which are also enlisted in the program will nearly double in frame rate while a small handful will also quadruple. So far Microsoft has announced a select number of games including Far Cry 4, New Super Lucky’s Tale, Sniper Elite 4, UFC 4, and Watch Dogs 2.
The Xbox FPS Boost mode will increase the frame rates to up to 60FPS for all the above-mentioned games except for New Super Lucky’s Tale which will target 120Hz. According to Microsoft, games that are supported by the feature will include an indicator at the top right-hand side of the dashboard when you are in-game. Similar to how Quick Resume and Auto HDR are shown.
Microsoft claims that this is just the beginning of the program and users can expect loads of new games being added in the coming weeks and months ahead.
“We will announce and release more titles featuring FPS Boost soon, as we roll out new menu icons and system settings in an upcoming system update.”
Microsoft is set to add the dashboard update to the console in Spring (autumn here) that will include the ability to turn on and off the feature in games. This way users can see for themselves if the changes are beneficial and keep them if they want. The Xbox FPS Boost mode will roll out soon and while the launch game list may be limited, they will add more right after launch.
Below is an analysis video by Digital Foundry showing off the feature in action.
