The Xbox Games Showcase for June 2024 has come and gone, bringing with it a number of new game announcements, world premieres and a handful of surprises. Last night’s event was packed to the brim with rapid-fire reveals and announcements, debuting over 30 games including the follow-up deep dive for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. We’ve decided to pick the five most exciting announcements from the showcase.
Firstly, we couldn’t include everything from the Xbox Games Showcase on this list (even though we really wanted to), so we’ll go through some honourable mentions. They are South of Midnight, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl and State of Decay 3.
Five Most Exciting Announcements From The Xbox Games Showcase 2024
DOOM: The Dark Ages
The next DOOM game is titled The Dark Ages and like it suggests, it’s taking us back in time (maybe) to a medieval era overrun by the denizens of hell. The game was officially revealed with some awesome gameplay that lets us shoot crushed skulls and use a Captain America-like shield with chainsaw blades around it. It doesn’t get any more metal than that. DOOM: The Dark Ages is coming in 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Avowed
Avowed just keeps getting better with every trailer and the latest one has us really excited. Coming from The Outer Worlds and Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment, Avowed looks to be a very promising fantasy RPG that will definitely deliver on the studio’s top-notch writing and immersive role-playing elements. As of right now, it doesn’t have a release date but the studio let slip that it arrives on 12 November 2024 for Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Keeping with fantasy RPG’s, Dragon Age: The Veilguard was officially revealed last night and it looks pretty neat. It’s clearly a massive departure from the more serious tone and style of past Dragon Age games but maybe BioWare wants the focus this time to be on the fun factor. Right off the bat, there are a lot of really interesting companions to meet so we hope that the game has a quality story to tell too. The Veilguard is coming later this year to Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Perfect Dark
Reports of Perfect Dark‘s troubled development certainly didn’t show in the trailer that debuted at the Xbox Games Showcase. The sci-fi action/adventure tone is perfect (no pun intended) and the gameplay, which hopefully isn’t too scripted, looks very promising. Unfortunately it could still be a couple of years before we can get our hands on the anticipated reboot but from what we’ve seen so far, we’re excited.
Fable
Last but certainly not least is Fable, coming to us from Forza Horizon developer Playground Games and technically a reboot of the franchise. The game is currently getting some assistance from Deus Ex developer Eidos Montreal too. Judging by the latest trailer, there’s enough reasons to be excited. The gameplay looks phenomenal and the franchise’s signature off-beat comedy is perfectly intact. The good news is that it’s arriving in 2025 for Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Bonus – Gears of War: E-Day
We lied, there are actually six exciting announcements. This last one is a bonus because while it technically isn’t Gears 6, it’s also a new entry in the Gears of War franchise that has our full attention. A prequel to the series, Gears of War: E-Day will follow a younger Marcus Fenix as he experiences the Locust invasion of Emergence Day first-hand. Developer The Coalition is working Unreal Engine 5 overtime because the cinematics look fantastic and hopefully the gameplay will too.
