While this generation trodges along in its fifth year, it seems like Microsoft is already making plans for its next-gen hardware. According to a new report, Xbox’s next-gen console has already passed the early pitch stages and has been ” fully approved and costed all the way up the chain” at the company. However, it’s unlikely that we’ll actually see the next console for a while.
The report comes from Jez Corden who’s heard about Microsoft’s quiet plans to move ahead with the next-gen Xbox console. Despite less-than-stellar sales for the Xbox Series X/S consoles this generation, it seems like Microsoft is still investing in new hardware. Corden addresses the fact that users are simply opting to play on PC more than Xbox consoles which have seen a decline in sales for several quarters. Game Pass, Xbox’s primary business focus, is seemingly flourishing on PC more than Xbox hardware.
The solution might be to cut the cord early on the Xbox Series X/S and set sights on new hardware and the next generation, which is apparently what’s happening at Microsoft. Corden states:
“Xbox is still pledging to build next-gen console hardware, though. To that end, I’ve recently been told that Xbox’s next-gen console hardware has now moved past its early pitch stages and has been fully approved and costed all the way up the chain. I doubt we’ll see a reveal of their hardware strategy any time soon, but what is perhaps more interesting to me is how Xbox will seek to entice developers to support its efforts on PC.”
If this does happen, we could see a repeat of the Xbox 360 era when Microsoft released the console a year earlier than the PS3. Of course, times have changed and this is no guarantee that consumers will suddenly shift over to a shiny new-gen Xbox before the PS6.
