The Hyrule Edition Nintendo Switch Lite

You Can Now Upgrade Your Nintendo Switch Lite to an OLED Display

Thanks to a new DIY OLED screen mod upgrade kit, users can now enjoy the world of pure blacks and more vivid colours on their Nintendo Switch Lite. The mod has been developed Retro Remake. I have been following it for some time and it provides an all-in-one package solution for users who want to upgrade their display.

YouTuber Taki Udon, who owns Retro Remake showcased the kit in action. He modded the new Nintendo Switch Lite Hyrule Edition console. The kit is available for $50 (excluding shipping) and packs all the tools and the OLED display.

The process isn’t for the non-tech savvy, of course. You’ll need to basically tear down your Nintendo Switch Lite, remove parts and tear away the old display using a hair dryer to melt the glue. There is also one downside to this kit, the OLED display doesn’t include touchscreen support. So you’ll need to live without using your fingers to navigate around the menus and games. Retro Remake says a full touchscreen kit is in the works.

I have torn down a Nintendo Switch Lite console myself and it is quite fun. But I have never replaced a screen. It seems simple enough but again, ripping a ribbon cable or losing a screw can really be a problem. The mod also includes extra ribbon cables in order to route the display to the battery. The IPS display cable doesn’t work in this case because the panel is different.

It is a cool mod. The OLED display on the Switch OLED is a real game-changer for games. It is brighter and makes games look incredible. Metroid Dread, for example, is one game that honestly looks entirely different on the OLED Switch. This OLED kit also comes with a better OLED panel that boasts 150% sRGB, a 600,000:1 contrast ratio and 600 nits of brightness.

To compare that with the existing OLED Switch display, it has 99% sRGB,  a 340,000:1 contrast ratio and 340 nits of brightness. So you’re getting a pretty impressive jump in display performance. You’ll just need to tear your Switch Lite apart to get there.

If you want the mod you can grab it here. I might wait until the touchscreen version arrives.
