Youtube is currently testing a new AI music playlist feature that lets you use AI to generate a music playlist. The platform says that in supported regions, YouTube Premium subscribers can create these playlists by describing “exactly what they want to hear”.
An example YouTube provided sees a user bring up a chat UI box. In it they describe wanting to listen to “catchy pop choruses” or “upbeat pop anthems”. The AI system then provides a playlist of music tailored to their requirements.
YouTube says this new feature is called “AI-generated conversational radio”. Essentially, users will create radio stations with the music they “feel like” listening to. If you spot the card “Ask for music any way you like” tapping on this will bring up the AI chat.
Keep in mind that using AI for music choices isn’t anything new. Spotify already has a similar feature where Premium users can generate playlists using AI. But this added YouTube feature is definitely a welcome addition to the platform. YouTube is likely adding it to entice users to sign up to YouTube Premium too. A service which is about to get new paid tiers.
Alongside the YouTube AI playlists, the platform is also rolling out a feature that lets you sing or hum a specific song to search for the full tune. This is similar to Shazam and will be launching on both iPhone and Android apps. You’ll be able to simply hit the waveform button near the search field and let the platform listen to a few seconds of what you think the song sounds like.
YouTube will then use its current music platform to search for the song and show the title and artist in the results. This feature went into testing in late 2023 and began rolling out in certain regions for Android in May. YouTube says more regions and iOS support is rolling out today.
