Three years after the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, a lengthy 4-hour “director’s” cut of 2017’s critically panned Justice League movie, director Zack Snyder is now teasing the possibility of a theatrical release in cinemas. Snyder’s cut originally launched only on HBO Max back in 2021 but it sounds like fans might be able to watch it on the big screen soon.
Zack Snyder recently posted a cryptic image of Ben Affleck’s Batman on his Vero account with the caption, “Want to see ZSJL on the big screen… stay tuned for a date.” It hasn’t been outright confirmed by Warner Bros yet as Snyder’s message is the only lead we have but it seems like a theatrical release is being planned in some shape or form. Whether fans would want to sit through a 4-hour odyssey of the ambitious cut in cinemas is another question, though there seems to be quite a bit of demand for it online.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League essentially re-cut the original 2017 Justice League movie to bring it closer to Snyder’s vision. The original movie went through various reshoots and rewrites after The Avengers director Joss Whedon took over directing duties for Snyder, who had to step away from the project following a family tragedy. The result, according to fans and critics, was a tonally inconsistent mess that tried to inject humour into a movie intended to be a bit darker than the average superhero flick.
With Snyder’s cut, that vision was realised, giving viewers an extra two hours of footage for a monstrous run time of over four hours. The movie was reworked down to colour grading and extensive re-edits, setting a more consistent tone. It was praised by critics and fans on release.
There’s no word on a theatrical release for Zack Snyder’s Justice League but we’ll keep you updated.
