Nintendo has broken Sony’s 4-week run at the top spot of hardware sales thanks to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Sony’s PS5 has been at the top spot since April when it comes to console sales but after Tears of the Kingdom launched, Nintendo’s Switch console took the helm.
Nintendo didn’t expect to sell new Switch consoles during the launch of the game. However, it seems the Limited Edition Tears of the Kingdom Switch OLED console (which is pretty cool watch our unboxing here) caused gamers to run out and buy a new device. The Zelda OLED counted for 35% of all Switch sales in May resulting in the PS5 console being knocked off the no.1 selling console spot.

PS5 console sales were down 23% in the UK in May compared to April. May was also the first month this year where the console wasn’t at the top spot.
The Xbox Series X/S sales also plummeted even further than before. Sales were down by 10% in May compared to April. Keep in mind that in April, the console sales were also down compared to March and April 2022. Xbox sales were down 19% year on year.
Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is also May’s No.1 selling game. Of course, this is a no-brainer given the hype behind the title. It surpassed all other games sold in May. Keep in mind that Nintendo doesn’t include digital sales in these reports so the game has done even better on the eShop than at retail.
Apart from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the top May games also include Hogwarts Legacy, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, FIFA 23, Dead Island 2, Far Cry 6, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 and Red Dead Redemption 2. Of course, this might change in the month ahead with the launch of Diablo 4 and Final Fantasy XVI.
