First up is the Casual Cosplay Competition which will run across all four days of Comic Con Cape Town. The event encourages participants to show off their creations by visiting the main stage everyday from 13:00. It invites store-bought costumes and custom creations. Additionally, Ubisoft will be hosting a special competition on Saturday at 14:00 on the main stage where fans have the opportunity to dress as any character from a Ubisoft game and win awesome prizes.

Comic Con Cape Town Show Director, Carla Massmann, added:

“With cosplay being an integral part of the Comic Con experience, we are excited to see the amazing costumes that the fans and the cosplay community will showcase. We encourage all visitors at the festival to participate and make this year’s event a truly unforgettable experience.”

Those looking to compete professionally will find Comic Con Cape Town Regional Champions of Cosplay, a competition that will run across all four days from 27-30 April. Although only one winner will be selected, participants are also in the running to be awarded either of the runner-up titles which include:

  1. Regional Champion of Armour, for a cosplay that consists of at least 70% armour,
  2. Regional Champion of Needlework, for a cosplay that consists of at least 70% cloth

Other awards up for grabs include Best Wig, Best Prop, Best Newcomer, Most Creative Techniques and Judges Favourite. Participants can register right here.

Over on the judging panel will be a few spotlight guests: professional cosplayer Elizabeth Rage, a veteran whose most popular works include Poison Ivy from Batman, Ramona Flowers from Scott Pilgrim and Triss Merigold from The Witcher, among others.

Italian cosplayer Leon Chiro will also be a part of the judges panel and has dressed as a range of pop culture characters including Dante from Devil May Cry, Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII, Ezio from Assassin’s Creed and much more.

Finally, Luke Andalis, or better known as Ludus Cosplay, will be on the judges table. A Cape Town local that started off as a costume designer before becoming a full-time cosplayer, Ludus Cosplay took home the title of Comic Con Africa’s Cosplay Champion last year in September, and will represent South Africa at the anticipated world finals at C2E2 hosted in Chicago.
