ASUS took Computex 2026 by storm with a few surprise announcements, one of them being the stunning new ROG Xbox Ally X20 which includes a larger OLED screen, bundled AR glasses and improved controls. Some key improvements have been made to the handheld’s design that fans should appreciate.
The ROG Xbox Ally X20 is the third model from ASUS and Microsoft’s partnership, specifically meant to celebrate ROG’s 20th anniversary. The previous models, the white Xbox Ally and the black Xbox Ally X, released in October 2025 for $599 (R9,999) and $999 (R18,999) respectively. The X20 model is largely based on the Ally X, including similar specs such as the same AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 1TB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage.
However, the biggest change is the larger screen, now measuring 7.4″ (compared to the previous models’ 7″ screen). It also boasts an OLED screen as opposed to the IPS screen from the other handhelds. “While this has been a common request since day one, we wanted to give gamers a display that was truly gaming-focused, and after years of R&D, we’ve got one with all the right specs,” ASUS said in a statement, adding:
“This Nebula HDR Display offers a Full HD resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate and FreeSync Premium Pro support — an absolute must-have on any gaming display. Once you experience the silky-smooth gameplay that VRR provides, it’s impossible to go back. The ROG Xbox Ally X20’s OLED display also boasts a peak brightness of 1400 nits and a VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certification, meaning that HDR-capable games and video content look simply spectacular. Corning Gorilla Glass with DXC cuts glare from unwanted light sources by 65%, letting you focus on your gameplay, not that lamp behind you.”
Other improvements to the ROG Xbox Ally X20 include better thumbsticks that use TMR sensor technology designed for “pinpoint precision, smoother tracking, and longer-lasting performance.” The tech is meant to eliminate stick drift with a bit more precision afforded than the popular Hall Effect sticks.
Furthermore, the X20’s D-Pad is a transforming one. Similar to those found on older Xbox controllers, players can switch between a 4-movement and 8-movement D-Pad depending on the game.
Finally, ASUS is also sweetening the deal by adding the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses to the bundle. Unfortunately, ASUS hasn’t provided pricing on the X20 or whether it will be sold separately without the AR glasses. We’ll provide an update as soon as we get more information.
