Baldur’s Gate 3 Used Intimacy Coordinators for Sex Scenes

Baldur’s Gate 3, the upcoming RPG from developer Larian Studios, used intimacy coordinators for its sex scenes. Usually, intimacy coordinators are hired for movies and TV to ensure actors feel safe and consented performing sex scenes during production. While these roles are mostly common in the movie industry, it looks like Larian Studios is bringing them on board to work on video games as well.

According to the BBC, Larian Studios employed “employed specially trained intimacy coordinators to make sure actors feel comfortable during romantic scenes.”  Jennifer English, who plays the Cleric companion Shadowheart, said, “I never felt ‘yuck’ in a recording session at all. And I’ve got quite a low ‘yuck’ threshold.”

Larian Studios believes that Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the first video games to use professionally trained intimacy coordinators, which is a big leap considering that few games in the past (if at all) have employed these professionals to overlook more heart-pounding sexual encounters.

That said, sex and nudity has been a big talking point for Baldur’s Gate 3 over the last few weeks, specifically how you’ll be able to form a relationship – and eventually get groovy – with a Druid while he’s transformed into a grizzly bear. Another feature discussed was the ability to customise your genitals and remove your pants in the game. If you ever wanted to push the boundaries of what’s possible in a role-playing experience, I guess you’ll have a lot more options now.

Of course, sex in video games has been a thing for decades now. 2007’s Mass Effect might’ve brought it to the attention of the entertainment world at large but developers have been slowly maturing games to the point where sex and nudity is more commonplace in video games today than we think.

Baldur’s Gate 3 releases on 3 August 2023 for PC and 6 September 2023 for PS5.
