Free-to-Play Crossover Fighter ‘Multiversus’ Officially Announced

After numerous leaks about Shaggy potentially squaring off with the likes of Superman and Gandalf, Warner Bros. have officially announced their ambitious free-to-play crossover fighter Multiversus, a Smash Bros. styled fighting game that brings together several unlikely universes across Warner Bros. history.

Multiversus will arrive on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC (though strangely not Nintendo Switch) sometime in 2022, and will also support cross-play and cross-progression. The game will primarily focus on 2v2 combat, with each character coming equipped with their own unique skillset and moves. For example, Wonder Woman uses her Lasso of Truth, while Shaggy powers up and throws sandwiches. We’re truly living in a great time.

As for the initial roster, Warner Bros. Games confirmed the full list, which includes the likes of Shaggy, Arya Stark, Batman, Superman, Harley Quinn, Finn and Jake and much more.

Multiversus Confirmed Characters

  • Batman (DC Comics)
  • Superman (DC Comics)
  • Wonder Woman (DC Comics)
  • Harley Quinn (DC Comics)
  • Shaggy (Scooby-Doo)
  • Bugs Bunny (Looney Tunes)
  • Arya Stark (Game of Thrones)
  • Tom and Jerry (Tom and Jerry)
  • Jake the Dog (Adventure Time)
  • Finn the Human (Adventure Time)
  • Steven Universe (Steven Universe)
  • Garnet (Steven Universe)
  • Reindog (an original character)

While the gameplay focus in Multiversus will be 2v2, Warner Bros. revealed that there will also be a 1v1 mode as well as a 4-player free-for-all, which should cater more towards Smash Bros. fans.

The voice cast for Multiversus is also surprising, to say the least. Matthew Lillard will reprise his famous role as Shaggy, while Kevin Conroy returns as Batman. Maisie Williams will likewise voice Arya Stark.

While previous leaks suggested that Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings would be part of the initial roster, it looks like he might join the game later on as a DLC fighter. This also includes Rick from Rick and Morty. If Warner Bros. wants Multiversus to thrive, they need to capitalize on the gap in the market left by Smash‘s signature fighting style which remains exclusive to Switch. With Multiversus going multi-platform, it could find some success.

Multiversus releases in 2022 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
