Microsoft has announced a new Xbox VR headset that will be a limited edition model you can purchase through Meta Quest. While users initially thought Microsoft would be diving into the world of VR for the first time, this device is more of a “themed Xbox” VR headset that looks more stylish than the ordinary Meta Quest 3 you can already pick up.
Of course, the big push for this model is the idea of Game Pass on the platform. In supported countries, sadly not in SA, Game Pass is available on the Meta Quest platform through the Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming service. This means you can put your headset on, launch the app and stream games directly to the headset. It then simulates a giant cinema screen in front of you. In SA, it says “not available in your region”.
The Xbox VR headset with Meta will seemingly feature a black and green design. Meta shared a concept for the headset on the announcement page. While the company says it is not a product render, this is likely what it will look like.
The Meta Quest 3 is highly customizable already with swappable face covers and straps. So making it black with a bright green interior makes sense here.
The announcement came alongside the push for Meta to open up its Horizon OS operating system to tech companies. Both ASUS and Lenovo have already agreed to develop their own themed Meta-inspired headsets with different components. The Xbox headset, on the other hand, won’t feature any different hardware from the Meta Quest 3.
We don’t know when this headset will launch but an official announcement will likely come in the months ahead. Microsoft abandoned its own VR development some time back but this partnership might be the VR fire it needs to get back into the game.
