Sony Announces PS5 Price Hike to Combat High Inflation Rates

Sony is increasing the price of the PS5 in certain regions. The company says the price hike is due to the ongoing economic environment that has proved to be challenging to the manufacturing and distribution of the console. Due to high global inflation rates and currency trends impacting the industry, the company has been forced to increase the price in order to meet specific margins.

The new PS5 price tag is effective immediately meaning you’ll pay more for your console when you purchase it starting today. The Only region with a delayed price increase is Japan. The region will increase on 15 September. The United States is not increasing the price of the PS5 at this time.

By the look of things, each region is seeing a price hike of around $20 – $30. In Canada, the PS5 disc model is going from $629 to $649 Canadian Dollars. The PS5 Digital Edition is going from $499 to $519 Canadian Dollars.

In the United Kingdom, the PS5 originally cost £359.99 and £449.99 for the disc and Digital Edition respectively. It will now cost £389.99 and £479.99.

Given that South Africa follows the Pound Sterling when it comes to video game sales and imports, this means our PS5 price hike will likely be R600-R700. Unless costs are absorbed somewhere, you will most likely pay R10,499/R10,599 for the PS5 Digital Edition and R12,499/R12,599. This is (was) currently R9,999 and R11,999.

We will update you as soon as we get the local pricing. Here is the breakdown for the other regions.
