Avatar: Generations Soft Launches in South Africa

Square Enix is soft launching its new mobile game Avatar: Generations in South Africa today. While mobile game launches happen all the time, we often get left out of soft launches when it comes to early releases of new games so including our little country on the tip of Africa is great news for a change.

If you don’t know what a soft launch is, often mobile games get launched in very specific regions in order to test network infrastructure and iron out bugs. These regions get early access to the game before it releases in larger countries. However, the difference here is that players get to keep their progress while the soft launch takes place.

Avatar: Generations has been highly anticipated by fans. The game is developed by Vancouver-based studio Navigator Games and is soft launching in Canada, Denmark, South Africa and Sweden across iOS and Android. Square Enix, who is publishing the game, says that more regions will launch in the coming months.

The game is described as an RPG adventure and includes fan-favourite characters from across the Avatar: The Last Airbender series. At launch, Avatar: Generations will have one chapter that includes Aang, Toph, Appa, Suku, Zuko and Momo as they set off on Aang’s iconic destiny. Future chapters will then include other Avatar storylines and other nations from the series.

The gameplay in Avatar: Generations focuses on classic RPG squad-based combat. Players will be able to recruit their party of characters and build an ideal party as they fight through the lands. Square Enix says the game includes iconic locations, stories, enemies, events and more from the Avatar franchise.

Of course, this is a mobile game so expect a fair share of in-game purchases. These come in the form of new party members and characters to fight alongside. Here’s a look at some gameplay taken from an early alpha build of the game running on Android. You can find out more about the game on the official site here.
