Blizzard Survival Game is Played in First-Person and Been in Development for Almost 5 Years

Last week, Blizzard announced that the company was working on a brand-new IP in the form of a survival game. According to the announcement, this new franchise will see players visit an entirely new world, meet new characters and explore vast fantasy locations.

At the same time, the developer revealed they were hiring for this said game which gave us the idea that it was still in very early development. However, it seems that is not the case.

According to Project Lead Craig Amal’s LinkedIn page, he started working on this new Blizzard survival game back in 2017 already. Amal left the World of Warcraft team back in July 2017 to start working on this new survival game. He claims the project started off as a “humble pitch” on his PC and turned into a greenlit project at the studio.

His LinkedIn page says that he began working at Blizzard back in 2004 as a senior game master. His role was overseeing World of Warcraft and offering a range of in-game support to players relating to the game itself. He then became the senior designer for World of Warcraft until 2017.

According to Blizzard boss Mike Ybarra, the new survival game is already in a playable state. He says that the team have played many hours of the game. This aligns with previous job openings the company posted for games they didn’t announce. By the sound of things, Blizzard has been working on this game since 2017 and has been hiring staff for the project since then.

Camille Sanford, Senior Character Artist on the project also confirmed the game is played from a first-person perspective. In terms of the gameplay, this is the only thing we know at this stage.

While we don’t know much about this Blizzard survival game, it sure does sound exciting. Other developers from other studios who are aware of the game have also spoken out about it.

Geoffrey Virtue, executive producer of Teamfight Tactics at Riot was reportedly part of the survival game’s development between 2019 and 2021. He spoke out about the game saying “this is a project that will have a big impact on the industry.” Hopefully, we will learn more soon.
