Godzilla Minus One Becomes First Godzilla Movie to Win an Oscar

Godzilla Minus One has made Oscars history after it won Best Visual Effects at the 2024 Academy Awards last night, making it the first Godzilla movie to ever win an Oscar. Last night’s Academy Awards were mostly stacked with wins for Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed biopic, Oppenheimer, though other notable wins included The Holdovers, Poor Things, Barbie and The Boy and The Heron.

Godzilla Minus One took home Best Visual Effects during the Oscars, going up against The Creator, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Napoleon in the same category. Elsewhere, Christopher Nolan got a standing applause after taking home his long-deserved Oscar for Best Director while Japan also represented in the Best Animated Feature category, earning legendary director Hayao Miyazaki his second Oscar for The Boy and The Heron (after Spirited Away).

Godzilla Minus One released in December 2023 to critical acclaim. The plot was set shortly after World War II. Japan is still recovering from the casualties in the war as the story follows a Kamikaze pilot that fled from his duty. When the sudden emergence of Godzilla threatens Japan further, the pilot must team up with a group of scientists and soldiers to stop the rampaging monster.

It’s astonishing that it took this long for Godzilla to get international recognition at the Oscars. The original 1954 movie didn’t receive any Oscar nods and since then, the quality of Godzilla movies has varied. Godzilla Minus One was the first Godzilla movie to score as highly as the original, earning a 98% approval rating on the review aggregate website, RottenTomatoes.

In case you missed it, check out the full list of winners from last night’s Oscars including Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Emma Stone, Hayao Miyazaki and more. A digital release for Godzilla Minus One hasn’t been announced yet.
