Hogwarts Legacy is most likely one of the most anticipated games of 2022. The game, which was delayed from its original 2021 release date, is now sitting without a public release date but we know it is set to launch next year. The latest news reveals that WB Games has new promotional content to show fans but the publisher is holding off on the reveal due to the ongoing backlash against Harry Potter creator J.K Rowling.
According to Millie A, who is a well-sourced industry analyst, Portkey Games has wrapped up production on a new “Hogwarts Legacy asset”. An “asset” in the marketing world is a new promotional showcase. Be it a trailer, screenshots, press release etc.
Millie A claims that this asset is ready to be shown to the public but unfortunately, WB Games has yet to sign off on its public release. She says that WB Games is concerned about more J.K Rowling media backlash that will follow the release of this asset. The publisher knows it will happen regardless of when they release the trailer or announcement but is hesitant to do so.
J.K Rowling has been shrouded in controversy over the past few years due to her offensive and derogatory online presence. She has attacked the trans community and has recently gone after activists who publically call her out for her online behaviour. Whether you care about her or not, every Harry Potter-related announcement is met with some sort of backlash from fans and media. This just isn’t good for the content and WB Games knows this.
While WB Games can’t avoid the online drama, the publisher will most likely showcase Hogwarts Legacy in the coming weeks. The game was announced way back in 2020 during the PS5 showcase event. Sadly, we have not seen or heard anything about the game since.
With The Game Awards taking place next week, we can only hope Hogwarts Legacy is one of the 40-50 games at the show. According to previous reports, the game is set to launch after the next release of the Fantastic Beasts movie. So don’t expect it before March 2022.
