NieR: Automata Sequel Teased by Yoko Taro

A sequel to NieR: Automata has been teased by series creator Yoko Taro and developer PlatinumGames. The action-RPG released in 2017 to critical acclaim, gradually becoming the highest-selling entry in the franchise. A follow-up might now be on the horizon as Taro has teased the sequel in a rather indirect way.

ResetEra member SanTheSly recently attended a NieR concert in London. Towards the end of the show, Yoko Taro took the stage to greet the crowd. He then informed fans that the Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda was present in the crowd, encouraging them to give their loudest applause if they wanted a sequel to NieR: Automata to happen. As the user reported, the crowd then “erupted into claps, cheers and yells.”

The ResetEra user noted that at one point at the concert during a story segment, the word “REPENT” was repeatedly shown as part of some dialogue, adding that during the final segment, it was actually spelled “R3PENT” instead, suggesting that a third game might be on its way.

It’s unclear if Taro was actually serious about this but the message was definitely heard loud and clear by Matsuda. That doesn’t mean PlatinumGames is actually working on a sequel to NieR: Automata at the moment – perhaps the crowd reaction was enough for Square Enix to notice the high demand for a continuation. On the other hand (in a perfect world), the sequel has already been greenlit and PlatinumGames are deep in development of the next game as we speak.

On that note, NieR series producer Yosuke Saito stated in November 2023 that the next title in the franchise was on its way “at some point in the future”.

The official description for NieR: Automata reads:

“NieR: Automata tells the story of androids 2B, 9S and A2 and their battle to reclaim the machine-driven dystopia overrun by powerful machines. Humanity has been driven from the Earth by mechanical beings from another world. In a final effort to take back the planet, the human resistance sends a force of android soldiers to destroy the invaders. Now, a war between machines and androids rages on… A war that could soon unveil a long-forgotten truth of the world.”
