That redesign of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie has proved to be a fruitful decision. The movie pulled more money this past weekend at the box office than Detective Pikachu becoming the highest-grossing debut of a movie based on a video game. Sonic the Hedgehog pulled $57 million in North America and $100 million globally in just three days this past weekend.

The film could have done even better if it released on a weekend that was not a holiday weekend in the US. The strong opening suggested that the decision to delay the movie and revamp Sonic’s design was a wise one. Back in 2019, Paramount Pictures revealed the look for Sonic the Hedgehog and it did not go down too well. His ultra-realistic, dare I say “rabid” design was frightening. According to Paramount president Chris Aronson, the studio heard the outcry from fans in regards to the design of Sonic the Hedgehog and they just had to listen.

They made their voices clear, and we listened. “This movie exceeded [audience’s] expectations. That’s a testament to that reset and terrific performances by Jim Carrey and the entire cast.”[/perfectpullquote]
The film will no doubt go on to making even more money for the studio as it opens in other cinemas across the world. Sonic the Hedgehog has not even launched in South Africa yet and is set to roll out in cinemas across the country this Friday, 21 February 2020.
