The Callisto Protocol is now out and players are experiencing gaming’s latest survival horror offering from Striking Distance Studios. While the full trophy list does pose some interesting challenges if you’re looking to hunt down every single one, there’s a tough one that’s pretty easy to acquire thanks to a new exploit discovered by players. As it turns out, to acquire the highest difficulty trophy, you won’t actually need to play on the highest difficulty.
PowerPyx came up with the solution to this. Essentially, players will need to start The Callisto Protocol on Max Security difficulty (the highest difficulty setting in the game) then simply switch to a lower difficulty setting. Once you go on to complete the game and defeat the final boss, switch back to Max Security difficulty before the end and you’ll receive the trophy for beating the game on the highest difficulty. This works with Xbox too as you’ll receive the similar Achievement.

Another way to do this (found by Kinda Funny Games’ Greg Miller) doesn’t even require you to start the game on Max Security difficulty. As long as you switch to it before the end credits, you’ll still receive the trophy. However, we’d recommend going with PowerPyx’s strategy as that has seemingly yielded more confirmed results from other players.
To avoid this little exploit, developers usually lock players into the hardest difficulty of a game and prevent them from switching out. A more recent example is God of War Ragnarok, which warns players that they won’t be able to switch difficulties if they choose to start with the game’s highest difficulty, Give Me God of War. Beating the game in Give Me God of War doesn’t actually reward you with a trophy, but it’s a good way to lock players into its more brutal experience and have them commit to it.
It’s only a matter of time before Striking Distance Studios patches this error out, but in the meantime, you can definitely unlock one of the game’s hardest trophies without really putting in much effort.
The Callisto Protocol is now available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
