Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered is out today and the game includes direct remasters of the original three Tomb Raider games in all their glory. However, given the series’ age, a lot has changed in the world. Media has become more sensitive to racial stereotypes and these sorts of themes are often avoided in modern games.
Due to the Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered staying true to its roots, various racial stereotypes have remained in the game. This has been done to deliver the experience in its original form. So much so that Crystal Dynamics has included a warning about the ethic stereotypes in Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered when the game loads up.
When booting up Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered, a warning appears stating that the game includes certain content which users may find offensive. It says various aspects of the game contain people and cultures rooted in racial and ethnic prejudices.
“The games in this collection contain offensive depictions of people and cultures rooted in racial and ethnic prejudices. These stereotypes are deeply harmful, inexcusable, and do not align with our values at Crystal Dynamics. Rather than removing this content, we have chosen to present it here in its original form, unaltered, in the hopes that we may acknowledge its harmful impact and learn from it.”
The warning doesn’t exactly say what Crystal Dynamics is referring to as “offensive”. However, fans believe that in Tomb Raider 3 the depiction of Pacific Island natives might be offensive due to their cannibalism traits.
Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered is available from today on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch. The game is a bundle of the original three Tomb Raider games including all of the expansions and secret levels.
