WhatsApp Gets Emoji Reactions, Bigger File Support and Larger Groups

WhatsApp is rolling out a large update for the instant messaging service. The update now enables new Emoji reactions for texts as well as sending files over 2GB, up from 100MB in the previous version. Meta originally announced this update last month and the changes are now appearing across iOS and Android.

The emoji reactions are most likely the biggest new update in the app. You can now react to texts in a conversation with Facebook emojis. However, Meta says that all emojis and skin tones will be supported in the future.

WhatsApp is late to the party with emoji reactions. iMessage, Telegram and Slack have been using them for years so this is good news for WhatsApp users. The feature will help you react to messages without having to type anything and clog up the feed with your responses.

We’re excited to share that emoji reactions are now available on the latest version of the app. Reactions are fun, fast, and they reduce overload in groups too. We’ll continue improving them by adding an even broader range of expressions in the future.

WhatsApp is also increasing the cap on groups from 256 to 512. This means can make a WhatsApp group with up to 512 people after updating to the new version. Meta says the group increase is “slowly” being rolled out across the globe so if you don’t see it yet, be patient. As for the emoji reactions, these should be available from today as soon as the update releases in your region.

Meta says that within a week. all regions will have larger groups, larger file support and emoji reactions available.
