Elden Ring Guide – The Best Rune Farming Locations

Elden Ring has been out for a couple of weeks now and players have already pin-pointed several great places to farm runes. Some of them require a lot of leg work, while others are as simple as exploiting a certain trick to net you thousands of runes per minute. In this guide, we’ll go over some of the best rune farming locations and how to get there.

First and foremost, you can benefit from gaining a few extra runes by using the Gold-Pickled Fowl Foot which gives you 30% extra runes for a certain amount of time. You can buy them from either Patches after he sets up shop, or purchased from the Twin Maiden Husks at the Roundtable Hold after giving them Patches Bell Bearing.

The Best Rune Farming Locations in Elden Ring

Stormhill

If you’re looking for a challenge and a decent amount of rune drops in the very early game, look no further than Stormhill. You can access this area by going up the main Stormveil Castle path, just before the heavily guarded entrance. Explore Stormhill to find five giants who each drop 1,000 runes. You’ll net 5,000 runes per run, and the nearby Site of Grace is convenient for quickly getting back into the action. Before you even fight Margit, you can level yourself up to level 20 or 30 this way.

Bestial Sanctum

The first of two trips to the rot-infested region known as Caelid, this farming spot is perhaps the most well-known for the early to mid game. You’ll first need to find the Third Church of Marika just North of Mistwood in Limgrave. Behind the church is a hidden teleporter that takes you directly to the Bestial Sanctum in Caelid. As you step out (ignoring the mini-boss), there will be fields of hidden smaller enemies down the path who each drop 1,300 runes. They’re relatively easy to kill, and one run around the area can net you up to 12,000 runes or more.

Lenne’s Rise

Your second trip to Caelid involves finding Lenne’s Rise. This tower can be found by travelling directly south of the Bestial Sanctum towards the tower in the distance, crossing the smaller bridge towards the left. Pick up the Site of Grace outside the tower and look towards the archway in front of you down the path. You’ll need Torrent to pull this one off. As you ride down this archway, a boulder will spawn behind you and attempt to run you over. The trick is to bait this boulder to fall off the cliff next to its spawn point, which involves pulling a hairpin turn with Torrent. The boulder will fall and net you around 2,000 runes. Simply run back up to the Site of Grace and repeat for easy farming.

Mohgwyn Palace

By far the most popular farming strategy that nets you at least 13,000 runes per few seconds, you’ll need to access Mohgwyn Palace first. In order to gain access to the blood palace, you’ll need to complete Varre’s quest and follow these steps:

  • Speak to Varre as soon as you step into Limgrave (that guy at the first Site of Grace that calls you maidenless)
  • Find him again at the Church of Rose in Liurnia of the Lakes
  • Use three Festering Bloody Fingers to invade other players (you don’t need to win, you just need to invade them)
  • Return to Varre at the church and he’ll give you the Lord of Blood’s Favour item, asking you to soak it in the blood of a maiden
  • Go to The Four Belfries west of Liurnia of the Lakes and unlock the Chapel of Anticipation teleporter
  • Beat the Grafted Scion and return to the chapel where you started to find the dead maiden on the floor (the same one you picked up your first item from)
  • Soak the cloth and return to Varre
  • Exhaust Varre’s dialogue and he’ll give you the Pureblood Knight’s Medal, which you can use to be teleported to Mohgwyn Palace

Once in Mohgwyn Palace (a very late game area) head around the bloody lake along the left cliffsides to find the second Site of Grace. Be sure to avoid the enemies too because they’ll likely destroy you.

From this Site of Grace, look over the cliff edge and you’ll spot a birdbeast roaming the area below. Take out a bow and shoot the bird to get its attention. It’ll immediately charge you but run off a ledge in front of it, dropping 11,000 runes (this can be bumped up to 13,000 runes with the Gold-Picked Fowl Foot). Reset at the Site of Grace, rinse and repeat. I personally recently tested this method and managed to farm a million runes in less than an hour.

There you have it, some of the best rune farming locations in Elden Ring which can all be accessed fairly early in the game too! There are few more I’ve excluded from this list, but hopefully these will set you on your path to earning those sweet runes.

Elden Ring is now available for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
