Gaming Growth Reached 2.6% in 2023 Across PC and Consoles

Newzoo says global consumer spending for PC and console gaming grew by 2.6% in 2023 totalling $93.5 billion. According to the new report, game sales, including digital and physical PC games grew more than console titles in 2023. PC digital and physical game sales grew by 4% to $40.4 billion whereas console digital and physical sales only grew by 1.7% to $53.1 billion.

While console game sales growth was lower than PC, it took the majority of spend in 2023 with 57% of all game sales being console. 46% of sales were PC titles. Newzoo says the revenue share across PC and consoles was mostly thanks to “blockbuster premium launch titles”. This includes the likes of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

“Premium’s revenue share was high on console, partly thanks to the full slate of blockbuster premium launches. The time spent playing those games took some revenue share away from recurring spending”

Newzoo says that 90% of all gaming revenue in 2023 was driven by 43 major games which were released across the year. 17 pay-to-play live service titles drove 59% of new consumer spending last year. This includes games such as Diablo 4.

The report concludes by saying gaming revenue across PC and consoles is poised to reach $107.6 billion by 2026.
