Hogwarts Legacy Debuts New Dark Magic Trailer at Gamescom

Warner Bros Games and developer Avalanche Software has debuted a new gameplay trailer for its upcoming game, Hogwarts Legacy, at Gamescom Opening Night Live. The trailer goes into some detail about dark magic and unforgivable curses, which can seemingly be used in the game. It also implies that, through using these spells, there will be some kind of morality system and consequences.

Hogwarts Legacy is set a few centuries before the events of the Harry Potter films and follows a custom-created character as they enroll in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Players will be able to take classes, explore the open-world of Hogwarts and the surrounding areas including Hogsmead, and uncover a conspiracy brewing at the heart of the game’s main storyline.

As the new trailer reveals, you can choose to befriend a Slytherin student named Sebastian Sallow, who will act as a companion on your journey. Completing his questline will take you through his family’s history. This questline is optional and your completion of it (and befriending of Sebastian) will depend on if you wish to dabble in dark magic or take the moral high ground.

The official description provided by Warner Bros Games reads:

“Should you choose to befriend Slytherin student Sebastian Sallow, you will be faced with the decision to embrace or reject the Dark Arts as you uncover his family’s mystery through his companion quest line. Will you choose to learn this dark magic?

Focusing on one of Hogwarts Legacy’s optional companion quest lines with Sebastian Sallow, the Dark Legacy trailer provides a glimpse at the forbidden curses and difficult dilemmas players will face as they learn more about the Sallow family’s mystery and decide whether to engage with, or even embrace, the dark arts.”

Hogwarts Legacy releases on 10 February 2023 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC. Check out the Gamescom trailer below.
